These carbohydrates are converted by the body into sugars that flood into the bloodstream and cause a rush of energy, followed by a rapid depletion leading to sluggishness and tiredness. The bad news for those trying to lose weight is that it also slows the metabolism, which leads to more fat being stored in the body. That fat generally gravitates to the belly area, hence the problems with belly fat experienced by people who eat a lot of white bread and other white flour derived products, such as white pasta, cakes, biscuits, pastries etc.

They contain more good HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol than bad and the carbohydrates are high GI, meaning they release sugars into the bloodstream slowly, keeping your blood sugar levels more consistent. Wholemeal flour also boosts your metabolism meaning your body will store less fat and burn calories faster, helping you to lose weight more easily. Making the switch to wholemeal flour based staples a sort of win-win situation for your health and your weight!
